From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the redaction procedure.

Questions Raised by Redactions

While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.

“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.

Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure

However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.

Yet some are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack.

“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement

Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the files' publication.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included little previously unseen data.
